With the New Year here, many of us are thinking forward to what we’ll change about our lifestyle or ourselves in 2015. The most common New Year’s Resolutions have to do with our appearance.

  • Lose weight
  • Exercise more
  • Try a new hairstyle
  • Dress more fashionably

Here are 5 no-no’s when it comes to deciding whether plastic surgery should be on your list of New Year’s Resolutions.

  1. Surgery is for YOU

A significant other who tells you that your breasts are too small or classmates that poked fun at your crooked nose are two instances where plastic surgery is a bad idea.

Always examine your motives for wanting surgery and only go through with it if you are getting it for yourself.

  1. Pressure to Get Cosmetic Surgery

Just because you get a two-week hiatus during Spring Break doesn’t mean that that’s the best time to schedule surgery. Any circumstances that pressure you to get surgery are not good reasons to jump the gun.

  • Time off from work
  • The surgeon’s schedule
  • A personal loan that’s only good for the next 30 days
  1. Don’t Be Trendy

With terms getting thrown around all the time such as “Vampire Facelift”, “Stem Cell Facelift” and other trendy names, beware of who is performing your procedure. New techniques that follow “what’s in” right now are not necessarily tried and true procedures.

Stay away from trendy aesthetic procedures that haven’t been around long enough to prove they deliver the results you want.

  1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Advice

When a plastic surgeon advises you to lose weight, stop smoking, get your blood pressure in check, or to hold off on plastic surgery, listen to them!

Doctors are trained to look at you as a whole person and to evaluate whether surgery is safe or appropriate for your current state of medical health.

If you have some things to improve upon, follow the doctor’s orders and come back to be re-evaluated at another time.

  1. Know Your Limitations

Any doctor worth their weight in gold will advise you against getting a tummy tuck, all-over laser liposuction, and a breast augmentation all at one time.

Understand that this many procedures at once are not only taxing on your body (to be under general anesthesia so long), but also increases the risk for post-op complications such as infections and blood clots.

Your plastic surgeon will let you know what they feel comfortable with performing at one time. If they advise you to wait to have another procedure, it’s for a very good reason.

Don’t “doctor hop” until you find someone that is willing to take a risk with your life!
